Turkey Burn-Off Biathlon

The Biathlon consisted of 10 Laps around the Soccer Fields (Roughly like a lap on a track, probably a little longer), the run was followed by 100 Free, 100 IM, 200 Free, 200 IM, 300 Free, 300 IM, 400 Free, 400 IM, and a 500 Free with a continuous clock so there was a transition as well. Not a lot of kids showed up, but those who did show did very well. I had two kids not able to run due to leg injuries so they did an additional 1000 Free on a seperate clock.

Biathlon Times:
Haylie (No Run): 50.23.79
Adam: 56.51.68
Monika: 58.04.83
Paige: 1:00.43.33
Olivia: 1:04.15.15
Denise: 1:07.39.35
Dennis: 1:08.56.36
Bertini: 1:08.59.61
Jake: 1:13.01.33

They really did do a great job, and with these times hopefully they can try to improve the next time we do the biathlon which I will keep the same format, so they have something to compare with and they can try to beat their previous time.

Easy, No Breath, Sprints

A set that I grew up doing under my father, and I loved doing the set. A 75 where the first lap is easy, the second lap is no breathe, and third lap is an all out sprint (All open turns). Many of the swimmers that swam before me and those that swam with me, many of us loved the set.

Trying to introduce it to my new group down here in Simi Valley. They aren't adjusting to it very well. I hope with practice they learn how to control their stroke enough to be able to make the no breathe lap.

About the new Blog Name

It began a couple years ago when I had a group of decent swimmers, but they were sheltered by the summer recreational league that is prominent in the Central Valley of California (Porterville to Yosemite). I had them do an IM ladder which went 100, 200, 300, 400, 300, 200, 100 IM's. Most of these swimmers didn't think a 200 IM was possible let alone a 400 IM. They finished the set and they were all so amazed because they truly felt it was impossible.

I was hearing a lot of "I Can't"s before, and the next day we addressed this as I had given a lot of thought that night. I explained to them that they had accomplished what they deemed impossible, but they were able to complete the set. I explained that they had accomplished the Impossible, even though it wasn't Impossible, but they had thought it was. We talked about how we really don't know what is impossible, and the only way to find out if it was Impossible is if we Challenge that which we see as Impossible. All of sudden Time Standards that seemed impossible before were now their goals. Some accomplished the goals, and those who missed their goals, after a meeting, felt that had they done what was necessary they could have accomplished those goals.

The Motto became "Challenge the Impossible." It bled into my jargon and spread to my High School Team that was made up of most members having never taken even swimming lessons, and kids extent of swimming was taking a bath when they were little, and some playing around in the pool during PE Class. These kids might not have been very fast by the end of the season, but all felt so good about what they were able to do, and truly accomplished what they had originally thought was impossible.

My 28th Birthday

Began practice by talking about how propulsion from the Kick. Talked about relaxed ankles. Then went over the importance of hip motion on butterfly, and had the kids try to roll their hips back and feel their back muscles work as they made the roll.

Followed in the water by doing some Fly kick on side to work on and feel for the motion (speed doesn't matter here as they are trying to feel for correct Motions) (an attempt to try to do some deep practice, the kids lack some focus on doing deep practice well though) (Focus has been and still remains to be a battle).

Main Set was the 28 x 50's (for my 28th Birthday): 7 x Free on :45, 7 x Brst on :55, 7 x Back on :50, 7 x Fly on :50.

My mom drove down and surprised me with Jen's Family with Cupcakes and Drinks for my swimmers. Keeping the Birthday tradition even though I'm 3 and a half hours away now.

Capture the Flag and Birthday

Capture the Flag went well, but doing it after daylight savings is the only problem. I was a little afraid of the older ones not participating and standing around to talk, but they put forth pretty good effort.

Practice was cut short as the Team Mom's wanted to get the kids out early because they got me a birthday present that they all wanted to sign. Did get to some of the V -> S High Tempo Fly 25's, but need to make sure I get to more speed work as planned on the seasonal plan.

Last Weeks Challenge Set

Last Week, I didn't have the blog up and running yet, The Blue Group had their first challenge set of the season. The 3000 for time. Previous experience with this was with a smaller group. I'm going to have to figure out a better way to monitor laps and times, as the larger number of swimmers I had a little trouble with handling Hard to trust the times I got because of the confusion that I had, so I am not going to post those. Many of the kids enjoyed the experience, and realized that it wasn't as hard as they first had thought that it was going to be.

The Beginning

I've tried this in the past, but wasn't good at keeping up with posting. I am going to try to do better this time. I don't have a plan for this blog, but I am curious what I end up doing with it. I hope to put info on here that swimmers might find interesting, but also maybe other coaches out there. For right now it will be mainly for myself to track some of my teams activities.
